WHAT IS LA PALAPA'S HISTORY?
East Village: W.H.
Auden, the poet lived in our building for 30 years. Leon
Trotsky had his printing press in our restaurant. He printed
“Novy Mir” (New World) magazine here when he lived in New
York before moving to Mexico with Diego Rivera and Frida
Kahlo. We dedicate Day of the Dead Altars to them on November
2nd.
West Village: It is a former speakeasy
and the original home of the “21” Club, the club that Dorothy
Parker and her friends made famous in the 1920's. Originally
called “The Red Head” it opened as a tearoom and quickly
became a popular illegal drinking club during prohibition.
During this era many Americans, and New Yorkers in particular,
traveled south to Mexico to evade the restrictions of prohibition.
They dined at places such as Caesar Cardini's restaurant
where the “Caesar Salad” was invented. The design will evoke
the spirit of Mexico and the food concept of an authentic
Mexican Taquería Restaurant, and of course we feature
the best Caesar Salad in New York City.
WHAT IS A “PALAPA”?
A palm thatch hut or umbrella on the Mexican beaches
– a shelter to get out of the sun with an ice cold beer or
margarita. . Click here to learn
more.
